"the gate saga"
“posting on behalf of my sister who doesn’t use Reddit. She has had an issue with a neighbor for about a month now after he randomly decided that she could not use the gate in the shared fence because it was on his side of the property line. She’s been living there for years and it just recently became an issue. It escalated today when a contractor came to do some work on her house and used the gate to bring some things to the back yard before she realized he had arrived. The neighbor came at both her roommate and the contractor in a pretty wild state. She called around to a few contractors and the one who came out to look did the job within a few hours and didn’t charge her because he was just so shocked that she was in that situation and wanted to go along with the gag. The best part is her new gate (left) used the same fence and looks much better than his. She called me to tell the story and it sounded like she stole the story from this sub, so I had to share.”

His behavior doesn't feel like a reasonable concern; in fact, it feels much more like an attempt to create conflict where none existed before. Luckily, the woman responded most smartly and creatively when hiring someone to install a second gate right next to the original one. Not only did she restore her access, but she also made the entire dispute irrelevant. Her response was completely legal and harmless, and highly effective too. With a practical solution, she removed her neighbor's ability to control the situation and gave no room to argue. This is just hilarious and satisfying. A next-level victory. She didn't even waste time fighting.

What is more, she improved her property in the process. She solved the issue, and also her new gate looks way better than the previous one. While the neighbor was trying to create a problem, he ended up inspiring a home upgrade. But we'll let him stew in his own frustration. Now, every time he looks at the fence, he'll be reminded that his attempt to restrict his neighbor only left him looking like a clown. Instead of restricting her, he motivated her to build a better gate and find a permanent solution. I bet he wouldn't ever come at her again.

That's the best kind of justice. Quiet and clever. So next time someone creates unnecessary drama, remember you can use it to turn their negativity into an opportunity to improve your situation. They can stay mad, but you'll move forward and make their complaints meaningless.

“Should've just cut down the fence on your sisters side and removed it just leaving the gate standing but making it pointless in the process” -

"Wait wait wait. Wait. So. It’s an easement that leads to both her place and the neighbor’s? And a shared fence with a perfectly good gate? And then your sister got a new gate a few feet away so the neighbor would stfu because he’s being a douchecanoe?Did I get that right? Because that’s hilarious and the correct kind of petty. I love this solution.
I hope she gave that contractor a glowing review.
This is awesome. It’s so petty and perfect and harmless and completely solves the problem. Exquisite."

“I wouldn't even call that a few feet, the two gates are touching each other. Honestly they picked the best placement for that gate to show the neighbor who the boss is.”
